Portraying the legendary 1966 Dewey Weber black and white surf photo taken by Leroy Grannis, Phil Roberts set out to create a memorial fitting of one of the South Bay’s most legendary surfers. Hermosa Beach Public Works Director Dick Morgan first dreamed up the idea in 2003, and through generous donations, most notably from fellow surfer and long time friend and surfing partner Joe Melchione. Left Coast Legends is proud to have played a part in helping to secure funding for this wonderful project.

Located at the Hermosa Beach Community Center on 710 Pier Ave, nestled in the Tiny Garden on the Southeast side of the building, the statue is surrounded by a serene garden setting with the relaxing water features of the statue providing some meditative relief.

On the back of the statue, the plaque reads as follows:

While you are enjoying the statue, make sure you take a load off on the clever surfboard bench.
