Fletcher Dragge
a South Bay Legend in
Punk Rock
Born: April 22, 1966 Hometown: Hermosa Beach
Fletcher Dragge, renowned for his role as the guitarist and founding member of Pennywise, embodies the rebellious spirit and musical innovation of Southern California. Growing up in Hermosa Beach, Dragge was immersed in the vibrant punk rock scene that thrived on the West Coast during the 1980s and 1990s.
Pennywise was formed in 1988 in Manhattan Beach, California, by singer Jim Lindberg, guitarist Fletcher Dragge, drummer Byron McMackin and bassist Jason Thirsk. They originally performed as “P.M.A.”, which stood for “Positive Mental Attitude”. They released two EPs A Word from the Wise and Wildcard (both 1989). Each of the band members had played in other bands in the Hermosa Beach area and attended Mira Costa High School, except for McMackin, who attended Redondo Union High School.
Before he joined Pennywise, he was also in the local Punk Rock band Con 800. He has also produced records for bands like 98 Mute, 1208 or Cigar. Due to his large frame Fletcher plays a 1 and 1/4 size RG420 guitar, custom built for him by Ibanez.
